Streator, Illinois is a welcoming community with a quaint city feel and tons to do. Streator is located about 80 miles southwest of Chicago, and is home to about 13,000 residents. Sometimes called the “Quiet Surprise on the Prairie,” we here at Coronet Mitsubishi are proud to serve the amazing area. This is why we’ve put together a brief history, as well as activities and events in Streator.
Streator was founded in 1868, largely as a result of growth in the coal and manufacturing industries. In fact, the name of the city comes from Worthy Streator, an early investor in the region’s coal mining operations. Some famous natives include Clyde Tombaugh, who discovered Pluto in 1930, as well as musician George Evans.
Looking for something artsy to do in Streator? Stop by the Majestic Theatre. This art-deco movie house was first opened in 1907, though it went through several renovations before reopening in the early 2000s. Now you can see recent releases and musical acts year-round, making this one of the best places to visit while you’re in town.
There are tons of events and activities in the area as well. For example, stop by the “Crack Pipe Dreams” music festival, held every February, which features a variety of pipe-organ performers. Park Fest is held every Memorial Day to recognize the holiday, while the annual Fourth of July celebration is a blowout. “Arts on the Prairie” is also popular and is a great way to experience the work of local artists.
