Home to approximately 7,500 residents, Mendota, Illinois is located 55 miles south of Rockford. Positioned near the junction of two railroads, the Mendota Amtrak station sees plenty of activity with a minimum of three daily trains from either direction. The city’s long history primarily revolves around the railroad, making it a critical stop for history buffs and railroad enthusiasts alike. There are also plenty of lively businesses in the area, like Coronet Mitsubishi!


History


Founded in 1853, Mendota, Illinois oversaw the meeting of two railroads, making it a thriving city for business and pleasure. The Passenger House, a depot and hotel, was built that same year. It burned to the ground in 1895 and was replaced by the Union Depot, which served as a hotel, train depot, and ticket office. Local officials often stopped in Mendota to deliver speeches in front of the Union Depot prior to departing.

“Mendota” is a Native American world that means “junction of two trails.”

Mendota’s first hospital was founded in 1918 and remained open until 1951. It was replaced by the current Mendota Community Hospital.


Local Attractions


Visitors can dive into Mendota’s history by visiting the Hume-Carnegie Museum. Showcasing artifacts of local history, exhibits include items made in Mendota as well as a collection surrounding Wild Bill Hickok, among others. There are more than 5,000 photographs and artifacts that extend as far back as the mid-1800s.

The Union Depot Railroad Museum is currently home to the modern Amtrak train station. Several rooms feature displays of railroad artifacts, passenger cars from the 1900s, and much more!

Those in search of a bite to eat should take a seat at Ziggie’s Family Room Restaurant. As the name implies, the eatery is perfect for families of all sizes. Delightful, home-style dishes and friendly staff are sure to make every visitor a memorable one.
